27 is enough?

Redondo Union's varsity roster of 27 barely fit in this frame. "We are making it work," says coach Tommy Chaffins

Redondo Union is 9-3 and ranked in the state top 10. Veteran coach Tommy Chaffins says his group is gritty, unselfish, and tight-knit despite his keeping a whopping 27 players on the varsity roster!

Why so many, beyond the fact that they are all “great” kids according to Chaffins?

"I think every player could play at a four-year school at some point should they pursue that,” he explained.  “The difference between player 20 on and player 14/15 was minimal in my eyes, so I decided if the players can deal with the possibility of playing minimally or not at all, I can manage a 27-player roster.”

Not all have seen time so far, but 18 played in a win over Bishop Montgomery.

Chaffins stressed that having a large roster can only work with:

  1. Strong character players who are unselfish;

  2. Players feeling like they can move up the depth chart; and

  3. Players playing at a level that does not hurt overall team performance.

“We are making it work!” he exclaimed.
