REDONDO BEACH — The Redondo girls volleyball team went into Thursday’s match against South Torrance looking to gain some momentum going into the start of Bay League play next week.

Redondo (11-4) started out strong by winning the first two sets easily and had to rally late in the third set to complete the sweep of South, 25-13, 25-14, 26-24.

“I really like our team,” Redondo coach Tommy Chaffins said. “We are really gritty. We play phenomenal defense and can really frustrate our opponents by keeping the ball up and then transition quickly to score.

“Abby (Zimmerman) is a great player, we are blessed to have her. Not only the skill set, but the leadership. She always wants the ball. She will go down as one of the best athletes in Redondo Beach history. She has been a four-year starter in both volleyball and basketball. Cal is getting a great one there.”
